The Twitter CEO Series by Stephen Akintayo
Why Some CEO’s Don’t Fly First Class
Ben Murray Bruce of Silverbird Cinemas is quoted as saying he doesn’t fly first class and that his car runs on solar battery and not fuel,He has never stayed in an hotel more than 300$,He wants Legislators salary& allowances reduced etc.I retweeted almost all his tweets. His statements triggered a lot of controversy on Twitter.
Why are Some Nigerians so shallow when they talk on social media.God gave us brain so that he can rest.I have made millions through social media not by silly criticism but intellectually sound arguments.I love what Senator Elect Ben Murray Bruce is doing as that’s what legislation should be about. However this article is not about that,It’s about some successful CEO’s who do not live extravagant life but a life base on necessity of status.I got an email from someone many years ago saying;the Stephen Akintayo claiming to teach people how to make millions is taking commercial bus.I smiled and I deleted the mail.Today, there are few cars I can buy but do I need to buy expensive cars when I have a lot of salaries to pay and more people needing me to pay tuition fee than I can currently afford? My answer is No.Life is in phases and Men are in sizes. There is nothing to envy in luxury friend but many things to envy in Impact.Delay gratification is one word business and political class need to get use to.
We have people Like Mandela who didn’t live a luxurious life but the richest man in the world will see it as a privilege to snap a picture with Him.What is it that Nelson Mandela have in excess that Bill gate doesn’t have.
It’s called Social Capital and another word for that is Impact or Sacrifice Capital.
Haven said that, what am trying to pass across today, Is that your company makes more money doesn’t mean you should live a flamboyant life.I was charting with a friend yesterday who makes a lot of hundreds of millions of turn over monthly and I said big man.He smiled and said No.You are bigger, you may not do much turn over like me,but you have rest of mind as you are not trading with people’s money but yours.I am using other people’s money, hence I must be extra prudent as my investors will not accept loses.
Businesses don’t last long in this part of the world because Big Car and houses is what is said to make you a Big man.Unfortunately, that is wrong,Bigness starts from the heart and moves to the brain before becoming a physical manifestation and even at that level,It is still never about the physical cash. Please trim down as a business owner and trim your over head cost if you want that business to survive your generation. Don’t eat for the now but eat small so as to have plenty food left for the future generation.God bless you and your business.
