Have you thought about what you would like to practice in five years’ time? Are you clear about what your main objective at work is at the moment? Are you actually fulfilling the reason for which you were employed? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of today? Are you focused?


What is goal setting?
When asking the question “What is goal setting?”, keep in mind that goals can look very different depending on lifestyle, values and definition of success. Your goals are unique to you and don’t need to look like anyone else’s. The classic goal setting definition balls down to the process of identifying something you want to accomplish and establishing measurable objectives and timeframes to help you achieve it. Goal setting can help you in any area of your life; from achieving financial freedom to adopting a healthy diet. When you learn how to set goals in one area of your life, it becomes easier to set them in other areas.
Why should we set goals?


Top-level athletes, successful business people and achievers in all fields always set goals. Setting goals give you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the most of your life. By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals and you’ll see progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. You will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your own ability and competence in achieving the goals that you’ve set.
Below are some important reasons for setting goals;

  1. Goal setting is vital because it helps you decide and focus on what’s really important to you.
    Effective goal setting also lets you measure progress, overcome procrastination and visualize your dreams. If you don’t know what you want to accomplish, you can’t create a plan to get there. Goal setting is the vehicle that will drive you to your desired destination.
  2. Goal setting also keeps you accountable. Whether you’re learning how to set goals at work or in your personal life, telling others about your goals makes you more likely to establish the patterns that will accomplish them.
  3. Goals make one focused. Without a goal, your efforts can become disjointed and often confusing.
  4. Goals help one stay motivated. It’s easy to put off work until tomorrow when there is no goal on the line. For example, let’s consider the life of an athlete. If they have to get in shape for a particular competition, you had better believe they are going to be working out each and every day; whether they feel good or not, whether they are sore or not, whether they are tired or not.

whether they want to or not — because they have a goal. They have a destination. Their desire to achieve their goal keeps them in the gym when they would rather skip it for a more desirable lunch. Similarly, having a goal will keep you motivated!

  • Goals help one beat procrastination. Procrastination is something we all battle from time-to-time, myself included. However, when you set goals in life, specific goals for what you want to achieve, it helps you understand that procrastination is dangerous.
