How much more can you earn?
Meet James Knight, a programmer who left a lucrative job at Google to pursue a career in freelancing. Now, he makes over $1,000 (385,250.00 Naira) an hour working as a freelance developer. (Source: https://freelancinghacks.com/)
I have met several people like James who do not like to commit to one place. They prefer to move from one place to another and make impacts. Unlike the stereotyped pattern of getting a career, work over the years, and try to climb the ladder of success. These people prefer to duplicate their services to different places and the fun part is, they provide the same services a full-time worker will.
Freelancing is a type of job (self-employed) in which the individual decides where, when, and how he or she performs the duty. In other words, it means committing to a particular job description and working for different employers for an agreed period of time. Like James who is a programmer. In engineering, architecture, and some other fields, it is referred to as a contract.
Freelancing spans through various types. There is hardly a profession that one cannot freelance and, albeit they exist, they are rare. On a general note, you can freelance as an Administrative Assistant, Advertising Consultant, Animation Creator, Architect, Business Planner, Business writer, Caterer, Computer Networker, Copywriter, Creative Writer, E-commerce Manager, Editor, Event Planner, Fashion Designer, Home Cleaner, Photographer, Videographer, etc. The list is, indeed, countless.
You may be pondering on what you stand to gain as a freelancer. Firstly, it is experience. As a beginner in your chosen field, it is advisable that you apply for freelance jobs as this builds your resume. With different platforms at your desk, you are able to do a lot of work within a short period of time.
Secondly, you choose when to work and when not to. Isn’t that sweet? When speaking to a short time employer, you state your terms and conditions. And that you cannot do in a normal secular job!
Thirdly, you get multiple streams of income. That has been the dream of many individuals and I’m sure you don’t want to be left out. You can make millions as a freelancer, like James! For example, if you freelance as a video editor in ten different places, on average, you could earn a hundred thousand for each of them.
There are many more advantages working as a freelancer but I will leave you to sink that in. In the episodes to come, there will be more to expatiate on such as types, knowing the difference between freelance and volunteering, increasing your popularity, and above all, making more money! Stay tuned.
